CLINICAL STAFF

Deborah Raphael MSW, BCD (LCSW #6211)

Deborah Raphael is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, and school counselor for Maybeck High School; she supervises the clinical work of Ph.D. candidates in the Department of Psychology at UC Berkeley, and maintains a full time private practice in Kensington. She has been working therapeutically with adolescents and their families for over 33 years. She has led parent groups and worked on several large NIMH grants studying the relationship between school success and child-parent relationships; these years of research in The SchoolChildren and their Families Project were recently published in book form.

While her practice is varied, she has worked extensively with high school and college age adolescents. She sees adults in psychotherapy and works as well with parents to understand their child; offering strategies for communication tailored to this age. Her research and experience has lead her to the conviction that, despite appearances, close parental relationships are extremely important in these years. She helps parent see how their role can and must change without their losing the strong emotional bond with their child.

Deborah Raphael lives in Berkeley.  She is an amateur but enthusiastic geologist and when not in her office, feels most at home high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. She has traveled extensively with groups of teenagers and enjoys watching their self reliance grow in wilder terrain.
