GROUP DESCRIPTION

Adoption: A Lifelong Journey
A GROUP FOR GIRLS ADOPTED DOMESTICALLY

Ages 8-11. Limited to 8 participants

Adoption truly is a lifelong journey, because we face the issues it raises for us at each stage in our development. Middle childhood is an ideal time to learn more about ourselves as adopted people.

In this group, especially for girls, we will explore many issues adoption can raise: the reasons for adoption, loss, control, fears, permanence questions, concerns about birth family, identity, feeling or looking different, how to handle questions about adoption, confusing school assignments (ie: family trees)

We will also be working on managing emotions, being more successful in communicating with peers, siblings, parents and teachers, refining social skills and meeting challenges with learning differences.

This group will use art, games, drama, group discussion and other expressive arts therapy techniques to develop awareness, explore feelings and build skills.
