NEUROFEEDBACK

What Is Neurofeedback?

a non-invasive drug-free technique to optimize brain regulation
it “wakes up” a sleepy brain and “calms” an overaroused brain
is training that exercises your brain so that specific neuronal connections get stronger
inhibits excessive slow brain waves and inhibits excessive fast brain waves that contribute to brain dysregulation
rewards brain wave frequencies that contribute to a calm, relaxed focused state
FDA approved for relaxation training
done by attaching sensors from your head to a computer that allows your brain to play a game without using a mouse or a keyboard
the equipment and software gives your brain immediate feedback using ‘operant conditioning’
YOUR BRAIN DOES THE WORK!
training is done once or twice a week and is individualized for each client, duration of training is over a period of months and is specific to issues and severity of symptoms (40,60 or 80 sessions is not uncommon)
NEW for 2008 20 session blocks of Neurofeedback offered in a two-week intensive format during the summer. #1 July 21-Aug 1, #2 Aug 4-15, 2008.

Research and Clinical Use

clinically, neurofeedback has been used since the late 1960’s when it’s benefits were discovered fortuitously using cats (Dr. Barry Sterman, UCLA)
since then, there have been more than 1,000 research studies done
the majority of the studies focus in the areas of Epilepsy, Substance Abuse, and ADD/ADHD
other areas include Anxiety, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Migraine Headaches, Mood Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, PTSD, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Sleep Problems, Tourette’s Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Autism Spectrum Disorders
